Surgery Department was established in 1994 soon after the Hospital earned the recognition as Regional Cancer Centre to meet the multifaceted needs of the cancer patient. Surgical Department is equipped with modern modular OT with all ultra-modern surgical gadgets.  In the year total 11285 patients attended the OPD and 1175 major / minor surgeries were conducted.

Gradually the Department developed in following specialties.


General Surgery is the first Department started with establishment of the Surgical Services in the Hospital.  The Department is equipped with state of the art laparoscopic instruments. All types of general surgeries including emergency surgeries, day care and advanced laparoscopic surgeries are performed on routine basis. Department helps Gynaecology Department in performing complex procedures.


Division of Surgical Oncology developed in 2007, with the mission to provide quality care to the patient with solid malignancies. Quality care means full implementation of the steps involved with the care of the patient with cancer, i.e. screening and prevention, early detection, diagnosis, staging, local and systemic treatment, follow up and rehabilitation, and palliative care. The areas of special expertise include breast cancer, head and neck cancers, sarcomas, and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, especially esophagus, liver, pancreas, and rectal cancers.

The surgical oncology department does all type of endoscopies (bronchoscopy, upper and lower GI endoscopies) for screening and diagnosis purposes, performs all type of major and minor cancer surgeries. In addition provide emergency surgeries & vascular access procedure (chemo port and Hickman catheter) for chemotherapy as routine procedure. Major plastic surgical reconstruction (breast reconstruction after mastectomy, mandibular reconstruction after jaw bone excision etc.) is also performed to provide functional and cosmetic wellbeing.   The Division of Surgical Oncology provides surgical education and the majority of the index cases for the training of residents and students in the areas of Surgical Oncology.

The Neuro Surgery unit started in the year 1998 under the stewardship of Dr. Kartikeya Sharma, MCH. The unit in collaboration with Oncology Wing provides yeoman services to brain cancer patients.

Department was further strengthened with appointment of one more Neurosurgeon Dr. Pankaj Gupta in 2016. The same year a separate ward for Neurosurgery was constructed. The 25 bedded ward with facility for critical care is added in 2016. It is the most modern and fully equipped ward to deal with emergencies.

Smt. Sonia Gandhi President and Trustee of Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital Society inaugurated the ward on 21st November 2016.

Total 5092 patients were seen in OPD and 306 patients were admitted. Surgeries performed under the Department included tumor removal, clot in brain, etc.

Equipped with state of art Pantax 5000i series endoscopy system supported by Phillips C Arm and ERBE cautery, Philips Multipara Monitor.


 Gastroenterology unit added to the Department in 2013. The Gastroenterology Unit provides endoscopic and clinical treatments for patients. The most commonly-treated diseases in the unit are peptic and non-peptic dyspepsia, inflammatory bowel diseases, neoplastic diseases of the digestive tract, motility and functional disorders, pathological conditions of the small bowel, malabsorption and maldigestion syndromes.

An important part of the clinical services is sophisticated endoscopic unit, with upper and lower endoscopies, proctology treatments, endoscopic laser therapy, ERBE, etc.

Total 819 patients were seen in OPD, and 77 cases were admitted.


Orthopaedics Unit offers the entire spectrum of modern orthopaedics management which is effective, patient friendly and result oriented. In a nutshell it is one stop treatment for all orthopaedic ailments and fractures with emphasis on avoidance of complications, rapid mobilization, decreased period of confinement and an early return to normalcy.
